Chapter Nine

Cate closed the gap so others wouldn’t overhear. “It started off fine, took a sudden dip, and ended on a high note. Word to the wise, I need to stop overanalyzing and go with the flow.”

“Hallelujah. Follow your heart and not your mind. I’ve been telling you that for years.” She wagged a finger.

Cate rolled her eyes. Eliza didn’t mince words. That’s what made her the best kind of friend. They didn’t have enough time to discuss what caused the date to take a nosedive because the line cleared out faster than anticipated.

The guys joined them at the table with drinks in hand.

“Three down, four to go,” announced Knox. “Team Hip, Hip, Hooray is off to a good start.” He tossed both partially stamped passports onto the table.

Will patted his friend on the back. “I had no doubt you’d be a contender for the big prize. What’s on tap for tomorrow?”

Sipping her tea, Cate was curious about Knox’s plan and if it included her.

“Off to the hospital at the crack of dawn. Uncle Charlie’s nurse indicated he probably wouldn’t be ready to leave until after the doc finished his rounds, but not worth sleeping in. My uncle will be blowing up my phone, wondering where I am if I show up past eight.”

They all laughed.

“The freezer is full of casseroles from friends, so at least I don’t have to worry about feeding him or me. I have rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes, and a salad for tomorrow’s dinner. Not sure how much he’ll actually eat, but I wanted to have his favorite meal ready to serve.”

Cate sat there and took it all in. For someone who claimed to be noncommittal and afraid to set down roots, he sure seemed like he was making himself at home. She could get used to having Knox around.

Will raised an eyebrow at Eliza.

Cate detected his facial cue—something important was about to go down.

Eliza nodded ever so slightly, giving him the go-ahead.

“So, my dad has a few ideas percolating in his head about the rebranding campaign he’d like to launch,” he began.

“Rebranding or marketing? Two very distinct things. Which is it?” Knox lifted his hands in the air.

“A little bit of both. The company’s niche is building homes for generations of Southern families. With more Northerners moving into the area, he’d like to establish himself as the building expert on Gull Island.” Will delivered his best pitch. “Think you’d be up for hearing him out? Maybe give him your two cents on the marketing strategy?”

Knox fiddled with the plastic coffee lid. “Let me think about this and get back to you. Is there a timeframe I should be aware of?”

Will draped an arm over Eliza’s chair. “I think he is hoping to forge ahead in the next week. Now is the time to strike with summer guests on the island with money to invest.”

“Duly noted.” Knox crossed his arms over his broad chest. “Let me mull it over for the next day or so and get back to you with my initial ideas.
